KLCI falls for sixth day in a row as global financial woes persist

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 22): The FBM KLCI extended its losing streak for the sixth day running on Tuesday as global markets remained jittery with escalating worries over the state of the global economy.

The FBM KLCI fell 7.64 points to 1,426.44 at mid-morning.

Losers beat gainers by 300 to 105, while 193 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 313.65 million shares valued at RM174.98 million.

Asian shares fell on Tuesday as fears about the ability of politicians on either side of the Atlantic to tackle huge debt burdens sapped investors' confidence in riskier assets, according to Reuters.

The failure on Monday of a "super committee" of US lawmakers to reach agreement on a deficit cutting plan was another blow to market confidence hammered for weeks by Europe's inexorably worsening sovereign debt crisis, it said.

At the regional markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 shed 0.10% to 8,340.14, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 0.38% to 18,155.70, the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.61% to 2,400.51, Taiwan’s Taiex was down 0.08% to 7,037.34 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index shed 0.04% to 2,696.92.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s Kospi edged up 0.41% to 1,827.52.

Maybank Investment Bank Bhd’s head of retail research and chief chartist Lee Cheng Hooi in a note to clients on Nov 22 said that due to the US markets’ very poor tone last night, there could be another downward day for the index.

“We advise clients to trade with a short-term time frame locally,” he said.

Among the decliners at mid-morning, Harvest Court fell 42 sen to 98 sen.

Harvest Court on Nov 21 announced Mohd Nazifuddin Najib has resigned as an independent director on Monday. He was appointed to the board on Oct 28. Nazifuddin still owns 3.98 million Harvest Court shares.

Other losers included Petronas Gas and KLK that fell 22 sen each to RM12.94 and RM20.48, MISC 16 sen to RM5.19, Sime Darby 15 sen to RM8.65, Shell and BHIC 12 sen each to RM9.58 and RM2.70, while JT International fell10 sen to RM6.30.

Sumatec was the most actively traded counter with 46.2 million shares done. The stock gained four sen to 24.5 sen.

Other actives included DPS Resources, Compugates, SAAG, MMSV, SYF Resources and Johan.

Meanwhile, gainers included Knusford, United PLANTATION []s, KrisAssets, Dutch Lady, BAT, Ekovest, UAC, Sungei Bagan and Kluang.

Alam Maritim edges up on firmer 3Q earnings

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 22): ALAM MARITIM RESOURCES BHD [] shares edged up on Tuesday after its third quarter net profit rose 50.5% to RM13.33 million from RM8.92 million a year ago, underpinned by its offshore support vessels segment.

At 9.20am, Alam rose half a sen to 75.5 sen with 55,400 shares traded.

The company said on Nov 21 that its revenue increased by 71.3% to RM116.03 million from RM67.69 million while earnings per share were 1.70 sen compared with 1.20 sen.

Maybank IB Research said Alam’s 3Q11 quarter-on-quarter earnings recovery was expected, consistent with its results preview.

The research house said that going forward, Alam’s 4Q results were expected to be flattish sequentially on seasonal weakness and full-year earnings should meet its RM28 million estimate.

“While we expect continued improvement in the OSV and OIC divisions, its high gearing level is a constraint to growth and a restriction to a re-rating.

“Alam remains a Hold with an unchanged target price of 85 sen (9x 2012 EPS),” it said in a note Nov 22.

CIMB Research has technical sell on DRB-Hicom

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 22): CIMB Equities Research has a technical sell on DRB-Hicom at RM2.12 at which it is trading at a FY12 price-to-earnings of 10.6 times and price-to-book value of 0.8 times.

It said on Tuesday that DRB-Hicom could potentially be forming a head & shoulders (H&S) pattern with the current rally being the right shoulder.

“It is now testing its strong support turned resistance levels of RM2.19-RM2.28. The recent reversal after touching this resistance band does not augur well for the bulls,” it said.

CIMB Research said the MACD has just issued a sell signal while its RSI has turned down after failure to breakout into overbought levels.

The research house said any more rallies into the said resistance band is a chance to sell.

“Aggressive traders should take profits now with a buy stop placed above RM2.30. Any closing below the 50-day SMA would mean that prices are likely to head back to retest the H&S neckline at RM1.70,” it said.

CIMB Research has technical sell on Sime Darby

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 22): CIMB Equities Research has a technical sell on Sime Darby at RM8.80 at which it is trading at a FY13 price-to-earnings of 12.8 times and price-to-book value of 2.2 times.

It said on Tuesday the strong rebound from the RM7.64 September low has taken prices back up to retest the previous support turned resistance levels of RM8.90-RM9.05. The 200-day SMA is also standing in the way of the bulls.

“Technical landscape is starting to deteriorate. MACD just confirmed its dead crossover while its RSI also reversed after testing the 60-pts mark.

“We believe that prices are more likely to trend lower from here and hence investors may be better off taking profits now. Prices are likely to tumble to retest the RM7.64 low if the RM8.65 support gives way. The 50-day SMA at RM8.57 is a support but not a very strong one,” it said.
