KLCI opens higher, blue chips lead

KUALA LUMPUR (May 4): The FBM opened higher on Friday, lifted by gains at select blue chips.

The FBM KLCI rose 2.96 points to 1,586.13 at 9am.

Gainers led losers by 84 to 38 while 74 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 19.99 million shares valued at RM21.55 million.

Meanwhile, global stocks and crude oil fell on Thursday after data showing tepid growth in the U.S. services sector raised concerns about the economic recovery a day before a highly anticipated labor market report for April, according to Reuters.

Stocks turned lower, government debt pared losses and the U.S. dollar trimmed gains against the yen after the Institute for Supply Management said its services sector index fell to 53.5 in April from 56.0 the previous month, it said.

U.S. stocks fell on Thursday as economic data sent mixed signals on the recovery a day before the April payrolls report, while shares of Green Mountain plunged after poor results.

Slower-than-expected growth in the dominant U.S. services sector drove the day's trading. The retail sector dragged the market lower after several chains, including Target Corp and Gap Inc, fell after missing April sales estimates.

MIDF Research in a note Friday said bot its own and consensus FBM KLCI earnings growth for this year were expected to be at around mid-teens, i.e. 16.2% and 16.6% respectively, supported by (i) decent organic earnings growth performance, as well as (ii) absence of lumpy abnormal losses.

“Furthermore, we believe the current liquidity-driven rally has not yet ended despite recent difficulty of the KLCI to sustain itself above the 1,600 points levels,” it said.

The research house said that with the risk-on mood still prevailing on Wall Street, as attested by the main benchmark which is stealthily approaching its pre-2008 highs, it may eventually help the markets in this region to resume their upward momentum.

“Hence we expect to see further upside to the local market with an “encore rally” in the coming months.

“We reiterate both our year-high as well as year-end 2012 KLCI base case targets of 1,670 points and 1,600 points respectively,” it said.

On Bursa Malaysia, Aeon led the gainers and rose 40 sen to RM10.20, Petronas Dagangan and Top Glove gained 20 sen each to RM19.50 and RM4.70, Orient 12 sen to RM6.80, Petronas Chemicals 10 sen RM6.65, Genting eight sen to RM10.58, Lafarge Malayan Cement and MMC Corp up sen each to RM7.39 and RM2.78, and KLK six sen to RM23.78.

KLCI inches higher at mid-morning, brushes off concerns after Bersih rally

KUALA LUMPUR (April 30): The FBM KLCI brushed off events over last weekend arising from the Bersih 3.0 rally and inched higher on Monday, in line with the gains at most regional markets, lifted by select blue chips in early trade.

At 10am, the FBM KLCI was up 3.64 points to 1,571.44.

Gainers led losers by 184 to 151, while 202 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 183.93 million shares valued at RM115.43 million.

Asian shares inched higher on Monday as weaker-than-expected U.S. growth data left open the possibility for more monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve, but trading will likely be subdued with Japanese and Chinese markets closed, according to Reuters.

Global stocks ended higher on Friday on strong earnings reports, while the dollar dipped as data showed growth in the U.S. economy cooled in the first quarter to a 2.2% annual growth rate, below a 2.5% forecast, feeding views that the Fed could ease policy further to boost growth, it said.

At the regional markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 1.12% to 20,973.80, South Korea’s Kospi added 0.44% to 1,984.09, while Singapore’s Straits Times index fell 0.20% to 2,975.60 and Taiwan’s Taiex shed 0.27% to 7,460.38.

Maybank Investment Bank Bhd in a market strategy note Monday maintained its Neutral stance on the FBM KLCI and said it expects the market to continue pricing in political concerns ahead of the 13th General Elections (13GE).

It said last Saturday's Bersih 3.0 rally had thrown up the possibility of the 13GE being deferred.

“On the external front, renewed concerns over the Eurozone imply heightened volatility again for equity markets.

“Against such a backdrop, we expect domestic equities to stay range bound ahead of the 13GE, and advise investors to stay selective in their picks,” it said.

BIMB Securities Research said on Monday that in the US solid corporate earnings, improving economic growth and employment had kept investors upbeat on equities hence the higher closing for the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 13,228 (+24 points).

Meanwhile European bourses all closed higher possible on a rebound after an eventful week, it said.

“We believe this as a lull before the storm as the situation in Spain is ripe for traders to manufacture more volatility ahead.

“To recap, the country recently was downgraded by the S&P and recently reported its unemployment rate of 24.4% for 1Q12 should become as a main target to derail sentiments, it said.

The research house said Asian markets were weaker possibly spooked by the situation in Spain amid profit taking activities.

“Locally, the FBM KLCI fell almost 12 points to 1,567 ahead of the Bersih 3.0 Rally as investors continue to pare down their holdings.

“We believe outlook for the local bourse has deteriorated for the 2Q12 unless corporate earnings for the 1Q excel. Next support is seen at 1,560,” it said.

Among the gainers on Bursa Malaysia at mid-morning, Chin Teck added 29 sen to RM9.30, Aeon Credit and Petronas Dagangan up 22 sen each to RM10.38 and RM19.28, Tasek 21 sen to RM8.76, UMW and Carlsberg 14 sen each to RM7.97 and RM11.62, Genting PLANTATION []s 13 sen to RM9.52, Toyo Ink and KLK 12 sen each to RM1.53 and RM23.82, while Petra Energy added 11 sen to RM1.27.

KLCI in volatile trade on global weakness, local pre-election sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR (April 20) : Malaysian stocks exhibited volatility on the first trading day of the week as the stock benchmark erased gains and sank into the red on Monday morning.

Analysts said global economic data and Malaysia’s pre-election sentiment could curb gains across the FBM KLCI. Crucial global highlights this week include potential indications of further quantitative easing by US policymakers, and China’s monetary policy, results from which, will influence the direction of global financial markets.

“Downside pressure remains for the FBM KLCI,” TA Securities Holdings Bhd wrote in a note.

“Against the backdrop of mixed economic data, it remains to be seen whether the Federal Reserve will provide any clue on a third quantitative easing when the policy makers start a two-day meeting tomorrow. Signs of another round of liquidity injection will drive up equity markets and the opposite could trigger some profit-taking pressure,” TA added.

At 9.59am, the FBM KLCI fell 9.24 points to 1,582.61. Across the exchange, some 424 million shares worth RM208 million were traded, leading to 160 gainers versus 263 decliners.

FBM KLCI slips at mid-day break, but hovers above 1,590-level

KUALA LUMPUR (April 9): The FBM KLCI slipped into negative territory on Monday, in line with the waning sentiment at key regional markets, following a drop in US jobs growth that was reported last week.

Among the better performers on Bursa Malaysia in the morning session was newly-listed EITA Resources Bhd.

Asian shares fell on Monday as a sharp slowdown in U.S. jobs growth raised concerns about the strength of the world's largest economy, prompting investors to curb risk exposure ahead of more U.S. data and earnings as well as figures from China this week, according to Reuters.

BIMB Securities Research in a note Monday said it would be a stop start scenario for equities this week following a weaker than expected job data for March in the US.

Therefore, investors and traders alike will reassess their risk/reward propositions before making more commitments, it said.

As of now, the lack of fresh catalysts will be the main excuse as well as the resurrection of Eurozone’s debt situation to be road bumps ahead for equity markets.

Then again, if both the US and China are to lean towards monetary easing, these may set the markets abuzz again.

For now, we can expect loads of fence sitters.

“Locally, the FBM KLCI failed to breach the 1,600 mark despite adding another 5 points to end the week at almost 1,599.

“For now, the lack of direction with some regional markets closed, we would expect a lacklustre market today with the immediate support seen at 1,590,” it said.

KLCI up 5pts in morning trade

KUALA LUMPUR (April 6) : The FBM KLCI rebounded on Friday morning following two consecutive days of losses as investors weigh global economic prospects in Europe and the US, against pre-election sentiment in Malaysia.

In technical terms, analysts said the FBM KLCI has touched its lower support trend line, and a break below that level could add downward pressure on the equity gauge.

“Nevertheless, the overall trend of the FBM KLCI still remained up. As the total volume continued to dwindle, the overall market is likely to remain in a consolidation mode with some penny stocks in rotational play,” SJ Securities Sdn Bhd wrote in a note.

KLCI extends loss on external woes

KUALA LUMPUR (April 5): The FBM KLCI extended its loss on Thursday, in line with the weaker overnight close at the US markets as well as lacklustre opening at regional markets.

The 30-stock index fell 3.79 points to 1,595.48 at 9am.

Losers led gainers by 57 to 23, while 86 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 13.1 million shares valued at RM4.09 million.

US stocks fell for a second day on Wednesday as investors contemplated a world without monetary stimulus and a poorly received bond auction in Spain suggested the effects of Europe's funding operations were waning, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, Global stocks dropped more than 1 percent and gold tumbled to its lowest in nearly three months on Wednesday a day after U.S. central bank meeting minutes dented hopes for more economic stimulus and as a Spanish debt auction drew weak results, it said.

BIMB Securities Research said European stocks fell for a second day yesterday after Spain sold fewer bonds than its maximum target and the Federal Reserve damped expectations of more monetary stimulus for the US. Spain sold €2.6bn (US$3.4bn) of bonds; near the minimum target of €2.5bn; and borrowing costs rose in its first auction since the country said public debt will surge to a record this year.

US stocks ended in negative territory for a second day fueled by disappointment over the Fed's latest minutes and ongoing worries over the euro zone, the research house said in a note April 5.

The Dow and the S&P logged their biggest decline since March 6, while the Nasdaq suffered its worst day of the year. The S&P 500 lost 1 percent to 1,398.96 while DJIA slid 124.8 points to 13,074.75, it said.

“Back home, the local market has retraced as expected where the FBMKLCI fell more than 7 points to 1,599.27; dragged down by financial and PROPERTIES [] sector.

“Net foreign is still positive at RM176.7m yesterday but we reckon market sentiment to be weaker due to profit taking activities coupled with weak share performance in US and Europe. Expect immediate support to be seen at 1,595 followed by 1,590,” it said.

Among the decliners in early trade, KLK fell 22 sen to RM24.38, Genting lost 10 sen to RM10.98, Maybank don nine sen to RM8.79, RHB Capital and Malayan Flour Mills fell four sen each to RM7.70 and RM2, CIMB, MAS, Mah Sing and TDM fell two sen each to RM7.70, RM1.34, RM2.02 and RM4.68 respectively.

KLCI ends 1Q on a high

KUALA LUMPUR (March 30): The FBM KLCI ended the first quarter of 2012 on a high note, in line with the global markets that mostly picked up gains at the end of the quarter.

The 30-stock index rose 10.89 points to closet at 1,596.33 on Friday, lifted by blue chips including banking and Petronas-linked stocks.

The closing was just a tad below its all-time high of 1,597.08 that the index rose to on July 11 last year.

Year-to-date, the index racked up 65.6 points from its December 30 close of 1,530.73. Gainers edged losers by 402 to 360, while 334 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 1.25 billion shares valued at RM2.08 billion.

World stocks rose with Europe up more than half a percent on Friday, picking up gains at the end of the quarter and with investors eyeing a boost to the euro zone's bailout resources that ministers are expected to sign off on later in the day, according to Reuters.

Despite the strong quarter, sentiment across asset classes has turned bearish since mid-March due to fears of a slowdown in growth centred on China, and the conviction that a huge injection of central bank money may only be a panacea for Europe's debt troubles, it said.

At the regional markets, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.47% to 2,272.79, Taiwan’s Taiex added 0.77% to 7,933.00 and Singapore’s straits Times Index gained

Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed 0.31% lower at 10,083.56, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.26% to 20,555.58 while South Korea’s Kospi shed 0.02% to 2,014.04.

Affin Investment Bank Bhd vice president and head of retail research Dr Nazri Khan said that despite pockets of weakness from China market (Shanghai Composite at 10-week low) and soft economic data from the US and Europe, he expects the FBM KLCI to continue market uptrend supported by local liquidity and strong first quarter performance.

“The local market has ample liquidity at the sidelines, accommodative Bank Negara, low interest rates and government commitment for economic project. Plain and simple.

“We also believe the local market will take further cues from a strong USA market,” he said.

He added that there was a fairly reasonable speculative element in the small cap stocks to create some excitement near term (Carotec, Mtronics, Keywest, Focus, Tiger to name a few).

“Though we agree that the local market is overbought and investors may pause after recent sharp gains, we are yet to see any evidence of distribution to suggest serious market wind down in the near term,” he said.

On Bursa Malaysia, KLK was the top gainer and added 46 sen to RM24.60, F&N up 28 sen to RM18.88, Takaful 27 sen to RM3.39, United PLANTATION []s 18 sen to RM24.98, Kossan, Bursa and DiGi added 12 sen each to RM3.35, RM7.38 and RM4.06 respectively.

Among banking stocks, Hong Leong bank gained 24 sen to RM12.62, AMMB 10 sen to RM6.31, CIMB nine sen to RM7.69 and Maybank seven sen to RM8.87.

Among Pertronas-linked stocks, Petronas Dagangan rose 26 sen to RM18.94, Petronas Gas 10 sen to RM16.84 and Petronas Chemicals six sen to RM6.74.

Carotech was the most actively traded counter with 99.63 million shares done.

Other actives included CIMB, Focus, Ariantec, Metronic, YTL, Naim Indah Corp and Key West.
