KLCI stays in the black at mid- day break

KUALA LUMPUR (May 8): The FBM KLCI reversed its earlier losses and stayed in positive territory at the mid-day break on Tuesday, in line with most key regional markets that shrugged off jitters from a day earlier following election results in Greece and France.

The FBM KLCI added 2.75 points to 1,587.62 at the mid-day break, lifted by gains at select blue chips.

Gainers outpaced losers by 302 to 272, while 332 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 620.94 million shares valued at RM467.71 million.

The ringgit strengthened 0.01% to 3,0543 versus the US dollar; crude palm oil futures rose RM28 per tonne to RM3,374, crude oil shed two cents per barrel to US$97.92 and gold fell US$1.63 an ounce to US$1,636.93.

Shares recovered on Tuesday from the previous day's plunge, as sentiment improved on hopes Spain would use public funds to bolster its struggling banks, although persistent wariness over Greece weighed on the euro, according to Reuters.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan inched up 0.1 percent, having slid more than 2 percent the day before for its worst daily fall in about five months and hitting its lowest in about three months, it said.

At the regional markets, Japans’ Nikkei 225 gained 0.68% to 9,180.87, South Korea’s Kospi added 0.50% to 1,966.13, Singapore’s Straits Times Index was up 0.42% to 2,937.16 and Taiwabn’s Taiex edged up 0.13% to 7,548.19.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.65% to 2,435.90 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index shed 0.05% to 20,525.90.

On Bursa Malaysia, BAT was the top gainer and rose 70 sen to RM55.86, Kulim 24 sen to RM4.48, Tasek 20 sen to RM9.23, Ekovest 17 sen to RM2.65, MSM 16 sen to RM5.34, Atlan 13 sen to RM4.39, Tong Herr and Permaju 11 sen each to RM2.51 and 84 sen, whiel Nakamichi and Multico added 10 sen each to 76 sen and RM1.25.

Menawile, Genting rose eight sen to RM10.64, Genting PLANTATION []s six sen to RM9.50 and Petronas Chemicals up three sen to RM6.58.

TMS was the most actively traded counter with 41.34 million shares done. The stock added half a sen to 9.5 sen.

Other actives included Sanbumi, Ariantec, JCY, Permaju, Naim Indah Corp and Metronic.

Decliners in the morning session included Jaya Tiasa, Toyo Ink, Lafarge Malayan Cement, PPB, JCY, Sarawak Oil Palms, IJM Land, MMHE, Texchem and OIB.

KLCI stays put above 1,600-mark at mid-day break

KUALA LUMPUR (APRIL 18): The FBM KLCI stayed put above the crucial 1,600-point level at the mid-day break on Wednesday, up in tandem with its key regional peers that rose on the back of a firmer overnight close at Wall Street.

Asian shares rose on Wednesday as firm demand at Spanish debt sales, positive U.S. corporate earnings and an improvement in a key German sentiment survey boosted investor confidence in riskier assets, according to Reuters.

The FBM KLCI rose 5.05 points to 1,601.24 at the mid-dy break, lifted by key blue chips including Maybank, CIMB, Sime darby, Axiata and Tenaga.

The broader market sentiment improved with 319 gainers, 297 losers and 310 counters trading unchanged. Volume was 1.43 billion shares valued at RM757.83 million.

The ringgit strengthened 0.04% to 3.0642 versus the greenback, crude palm oil futures for the third month delivery fell RM8 per tonne to RM3,495, crude oil added 19 cents per barrel to US$102.39 while gold rose US$3.13 an ounce to US$1,652.70.

At the regional markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.85% to 9,639.36, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index up 1.2% to 20,808.80, the Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.33% to 2,366.11, south Korea’s Kospi rose 1.06% to 2,006.31 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index edged up 0.57% to 3,003.63, while Taiwan’s Taiex was up 0.39% to 7,615.42.

Among the gainers in the morning session, BAT rose 54 sen to RM55, Dutch Lady added 38 sen to RM34.98, SAM Engineering up 27 sen to RM3.86, subur Tiasa 22 sen to RM3.04, Carlsberg 20 sen to RM11.24, Hong Leong Industries 18 sen to RM4.29, while Tong Herr, Panasonic and United PLANTATION []s gained 10 sen each to RM2.49, RM21.70 and RM24.70.

Meanwhile, Maybank and CIMB rose six sen each to RM8.87 and RM7.68, Sime Darby, Axiata and Tenaga were up three sen each to RM9.93, RM5.39 and RM6.54 respectively.

Metronic was the most actively traded counter with 291.81 million shares done. The stock rose four sen to 21.5 sen.

Other actives included Ariantec, SuperComNet, Focus, Naim Indah Corp, Sanichi and SCL.

Decliners included Nestle, Far East, Sarawak Oil Palms, APM, PMB Tech, KLK, UMS, HLFG and SMPC.

KLCI slips at mid-morning, Asian markets mixed

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 11): The FBM KLCI slipped into negative territory at mid-morning on Wednesday while Asian markets remained mixed, with gains capped by lingering worries over the eurozone debt crisis.

The FBM KLCI shed 0.51 of a point to 1,521.48 at 10.01am.

Gainers edged losers by 258 to 169, while 264 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 502.95 million shares valued at RM292.22 million.

At the regional markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 0.21% to 8,440.12, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index added 0.23% to 19,048.00, Taiwan’s Taiex gained 0.33% to 7,202.25 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index edged up 0.05% to 2,721.31.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.33% to 1,847.08 and the Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.08% to 2,283.99.

BIMB Securities Research in a note Jan 11 said investors were warming up to the developments in the Eurozone.

It said that positive comments from Fitch that it will not downgrade France this year despite placing the region on negative watch list last year had put a different perspective on Europe now.

Consequently, most major European bourses charted positive gains overnight.

The research house said better earnings indication from Alcoa coupled with any absence of negative news saw another positive day for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (+70 points) whilst the S&P 500 ended on a 12-month high.

“Regionally, equity markets snapped their dismal runs with most ended in positive territory following better indications from Europe.

“As for the FBMKLCI, it closed on a flat note at 1,521 just a tad below the next resistance of 1,525 of which may be tested today,” it said.

On Bursa Malaysia, Tong Herr fell 15 sen to RM1.93, PPB down 14 sen to RM17.06, Telekom nine sen to RM4.82, HELP, LPI Capital and BAT down six sen each to RM1.50, RM14.02 and RM49.84 respectively, while Can-One fell five sen to RM1.73.

Among the gainers at mid-morning, Dutch Lady rose 38 sen to RM26.38, Mudajaya 20 sen to RM2.52, Supermax 13 sen to RM4.06, UMW and Latexx 11 sen each to RM7 and RM2.02, Cepco and Hai-O nine sen each to RM1.69 and RM2.06, while Petronas Gas and Tenaga were up eight sen each to RM15.42 and RM6.15.

The actives included Mudajaya, Hubline, Takaso, PDZ, Benalec and JCY.
