Tomypak has good defensive qualities

Tomypak Holdings Bhd (Nov 4, RM0.98)
Maintain outperform with revised target price of RM1.67 from RM1.52: Tomypak’s 3QFY11 earnings resurgence should continue over the next few quarters. The strong demand for its products during these uncertain times is affirmation of the defensive nature of its business. Adding to its appeal is its net dividend yield of 6% to 8%.

Despite being 82% of our full-year forecast when annualised, 9MFY11 core net profit was within expectations as 4Q should be a stronger quarter. Our target price, based on 6.2 times CY13 price earnings ratio or a 30% discount to Daibochi’s target PER, rises with its rollover to end-2012. We reiterate our “outperform” call.

Bouncing back in 3QFY11 Tomypak experienced a strong earnings recovery. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) for 3QFY11 jumped 30% quarter-on-quarter as the Ebitda margin ticked up 3.1% points q-o-q to 13.3%.

But net profit advanced by only 21% q-o-q due to a higher tax rate of 26%. The tax rate should return to the early teens in the next quarter due to new reinvestment incentives. Raw material prices were stable in 3QFY11, which was not the case in 2QFY11 when crude oil prices had gone as high as US$115/barrel.

On average, raw materials account for 70% to 75% of Tomypak’s production cost and most of its raw materials are derivatives of crude oil. The crude oil price is currently around US$90 per barrel.

Tomypak declared a 1.5 sen tax-exempt dividend per share (DPS) in 3QFY11, which was within expectations. This takes year-to-date DPS to 4.3 sen. What do we think? The worst appears to be over. If the EU crisis worsens and the US economy deteriorates, the crude oil price could tumble over the next few quarters, which should benefit Tomypak.

Product demand remains strong as most of its customers are either local or from within Asean. The company was unscathed by the 2008 financial crisis and we see no reason why it should be any different this time.

Investors should accumulate this stock for its defensive qualities. Some 90% of its sales come from the resilient food and beverage sector and downside is capped by its 6% to 8% net dividend yields. — CIMB IB Research, Nov 4

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 4): Markets are expected to continue to stay cautious on Friday as they await a resolution to the Greece crisis.

The eurozone bailout hangs in the balance following Greece's decision to hold a referendum on the plan in December.

But the prospect that the Greek government might collapse, delaying the referendum, raised hopes that the bail out might go ahead after all, Reuters reported.

However, the uncertainty will continue to push investors to sidelines.

Among the stocks to watch on Friday are Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd (MMHE), Lingui Developments Bhd, Yeo Hiap Seng (Malaysia) Bhd, ARK RESOURCES BHD [] and TOMYPAK HOLDINGS BHD [].

MMHE secured a RM1.4 billion contract to build an offshore platform deck and two inter-platform bridges. Its unit Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd had signed a contract with ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc. which was part of the Tapis enhanced oil recovery project.

Lingui posted net loss of RM28.06 million in the first quarter ended Sept 30, 2011 versus net profit of RM39 million a year ago as it was adversely affected by losses in fair value of biological assets.

Its that revenue increased by 19.1% to RM435.01 million from RM365.05 million. Loss per share was 4.25 sen compared with earnings per share of 5.91 sen. Operating profit was RM19.46 million compared with RM9.59 million a year ago.

“The group recognised a loss from changes in fair value of biological assets of RM25.9 million as the softwood log prices soften at the end of financial quarter under review compared to immediate preceding financial quarter,” it said.

Yeo Hiap Seng’s earnings rose 104% to RM8.27 million in the third quarter ended Sept 30 from RM4.05 million a year, as it benefited from better sales, less bad debts write off and gain on disposal of machinery.

Its revenue increased by 26.5% to RM147.12 million from RM116.27 million as sales for Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore including the export market grew by 18%, 368% and 8% respectively.

Tomypak Holdings Bhd's earnings rose 12.21% to RM3.40 million for the quarter ended Sept 30, 2011 from RM3.03 million a year ago, due to higher sales. Its revenue increased 25.8% to RM54.73 million from RM43.49 million. Earnings per share were 3.14 sen compared with 2.80 sen. The group announced dividends of 1.50 sen compared to 1.40 sen a year ago.

ARK Resources Bhd will be uplifted from the Practice Note 17 with effect from Friday after it had regularised its financial condition.

Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd has deferred the decision to suspend and delist the securities of TRICUBES BHD [].

CIMB Research has technical buy on Tomypak

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Equities Research has a technical buy on Tomypak Holdings at 91.5 sen at which it is trading at a FY12 price-to-earnings of 3.7 times and price-to-book value of 0.5 times.

It said on Monday, Oct 24 Tomypak may have bottomed out at the 86 sen level. Recent rebound lifted prices above its downward slopping resistance trend line and this could be seen as a prelude to more upside ahead.

“If prices can continue to hold above its 30-day and 50-day SMAs, there is a good chance that prices may re-rate towards 97 sen to 99.5 sen levels. The 200-day SMA is also a magnet for prices.

CIMB Research said traders may start to nibble now. However, it cautioned that traders should be prepared to cut loss if the 86 sen level is violated. A slight setback is its thin trading volume.
