KLCI claws back to close higher

KUALA LUMPUR (APRIL 26): The FBM KLCI clawed back to reverse its losses and close higher on Thursday in line with the advance at most key regional markets, on the back of the firmer overnight close at Wall Street and encouraging statements on policy from the US Federal Reserve.

The FBM KLCI rose 0.34 of a point to 1,579.69 at 5pm, clawing back from its intra-day low of 1,577.71.

Market breadth remained weak with 453 losers, 253 gainers and 321 counters trading unchanged. Volume was 1.45 billion shares valued at RM1.46 billion.

Asian shares rose on Thursday, retaining positive momentum as the Federal Reserve reassured markets it would keep its very accommodative stance to support growth, while optimism grew over strong quarterly corporate earnings.

Investor confidence was also boosted by a rally in Apple Inc shares as it reported quarterly profits nearly doubling on the back of soaring iPhone sales in China, lifting tech-heavy Asian markets such as Taiwan and South Korea earlier in the day.

There was scepticism Asian markets would climb as much as their global counterparts did overnight, however, as concerns remain over European banks, with Spain's Santander reporting its first-quarter results later in the session, it said.

At the regional markets, the Hong Kong’s hang Seng Index gained 0.79% to 20,809.71, Japan’s Nikkei 225 edged up 0.01% to 9,561.83, south Korea’s Kospi rose 0.10% to 1,964.04 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s taiex fell 0.55% to 7,521.35 and the Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.09% to 2,40470.

On Bursa Malaysia, United PLANTATION []s led the gainers and was up 44 sen to RM25.94, Panasonic added 40 sen to RM23, BAT up 38 sen to RM55.50, Dutch Lady added 20 sen to RM33.90. Milux 15 sen to RM1.35, KrisAssets and Tradewinds Plantations up 14 sen each to RM6.90 and RM5.70, while Takaful and KPJ Healthcare rose 13 sen each to RM3.80 and RM5.56.

Utopia was the most actively traded counter with 194.51 million shares done. The stock fell half a sen to 9 sen.

Other actives included Ariantec, Metronic, Focus, Naim Indah Corp, SCL, Astral Supreme and ManagePay.

Decliners included Country View, Jaya Tiasa, HLFG, SapuraCrest, Petronas Dagangan, Genting, Kencana, SEGi and Sunway.

RHB Research positive on KPJ Healthcare’s Sarawak hospital plan with Naim

KUAL LUMPUR (April 20): RHB Research has an Outperform rating on KPJ HEALTHCARE BHD [] with a fair value RM5.69 and said it was positive on KPJ entering into a JV agreement with Naim Land, a 100%-subsidiary of Naim Holdings to construct and operate a hospital in Miri, Sarawak.

KPJ would own 70% of the while Naim Land would hold 30% upon completion of the deal.

The research house said on Friday that this was in line with KPJ’s plan to open at least 2 new hospitals per annum (p.a.).

“KPJ’s hospitals are currently operating at high occupancy rate of 70-75% and thus there is a need to add capacity. KPJ will fund its equity portion of RM13.7m via internally-generated funds.

“No change to forecasts which had earlier assumed sufficient capex of RM200 million p.a,” it said.

KPJ Healthcare teams up with Naim Holdings to set up hospital in Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR (April 19): KPJ HEALTHCARE BHD [] is teaming up with NAIM HOLDINGS BHD [] to build and own a hospital in Miri, Sarawak.

It said on Thursday that its wholly owned unit, Kumpulan Perubatan (Johor) Sdn Bhd (KPJSB)had signed a joint venture agreement (JV) with Naim Land Sdn Bhd (NLSB) for the purpose of designing, developing, building, completing and owning a purpose-built hospital building and subsequently operating as a hospital on 4-acre land in Kuala Baram district.

NLSB is a wholly owned subsidiary of Naim Holdings Bhd.

KPJ said the JV would operate through a joint venture company (JVC) , of which KPJSB will hold 70% equity interest while NLSB will hold the remaining 30% equity interest at all times.

It said the JVC would have an initial authorised share capital of RM25 million divided into 25 million ordinary shares of RM1.00 each and an initial issued share capital of RM2.00 divided two (2) ordinary shares of RM1.00 each.

KPJ said the subscription price of RM13.76 million for 13.76 million JVC shares would be financed via internally generated funds of the KPJ Group.

On the rationale for the JV, KPJ said the joint venture was in line with its objective to increase its network of hospitals to locations where private healthcare is in demand, enlarge the customer base as well as other areas of healthcare services.

IT said the JV would leverage on KPJ and NLSB’s capabilities to successfully operate as a private hospital.

“The Proposed JV shall lower KPJ’s initial start up cost, i.e. cost of land and CONSTRUCTION [] cost of hospital building, and lower maintenance spend,” it said.

KLCI closes higher, but stays shy of 1,600-mark

KUALA LUMPUR (APRIL 10): The FBM KLCI closed higher on Tuesday, but stayed shy of the 1600-point mark as investor sentiment appeared to be cautious given the concerns over data that came from the US and China.

Regional markets were mostly mixed on Tuesday, as investors remained cautious after Chinese trade data showed the world's second largest economy may be able to achieve a soft landing but global growth concerns lingered given the sharp slowdown in U.S. job creation, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, European stocks posted sharp early losses on Tuesday and German government bond yields hit their lowest levels since September, as investors returning from a holiday weekend cut their exposure to risky assets after surprisingly weak March U.S. jobs data, it said.

The FBM KLCI rose 5.89 points to 1,597.17. It had earlier risen to its intra-day high of 1,598.53.

Gainers overtook losers by 365 to 332, while 33 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 1.11 billion shares valued at RM1.58 billion.

The worries about the health of the giant U.S. economy overshadowed positive trade numbers from Germany and China, with both nations enjoying strong export growth, although weak Chinese import numbers took some of the gloss off the data, said Reuters.

At the regional markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 1.15% to 20,356.24, Japan’s Nikkei 225 shed 0.09% to 9,538.02, and South Korea’s Kospi was down 0.13% to 1,994.41.

The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.88% to 2,305.86, Taiwan’s Taiex gained 0.52% to 7,640.68 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index up 0.59% to 2,977.70.

On Bursa Malaysia, Country View was the top gainer and rose 29.5 sen to 95.5 sen, Tradewinds PLANTATION []s added 26 sen to RM5.71, Genting rose 24 sen to RM11.08, Tradewinds added 24 sen to RM10.16, Batu Kawan 20 sen to RM18.74, BLD Plantations 19 sen to RM9.39, Chin Teck 14 sen to RM9.20, KPJ and SMPC up 13 sen each to RM5.29 and RM2.49, while Carlsberg added 12 sen to RM10.86.

Naim Indah Corp was the most actively traded counter with 69.82 million shares done. The stock gained one sen to 54 sen.

Other actives included DiGi, Metronic, KBES, Tiger Synergy, CSL, DPS, Ariantec and Managed Pay.

Meanwhile, decliners included Aeon, Sarawak Oil Palms, GBH, Advanced Packaging, GAB, Amtek, Malpac, Panasonic, UAC and Inno.

KLCI edges up at mid-day break, crosses 1,590-mark

KUALA LUMPUR (APRIL 9): The FBM KLCI ticked upward at the mid-day break on Tuesday and moved above the 1,590-point mark, while investors at the regional markets took a cautious stance.

Asian shares struggled on Tuesday as investors remained cautious after Chinese trade data showed the world's second largest economy may be able to achieve a soft landing but global growth concerns lingered given the sharp slowdown in U.S. job creation, according to Reuters.

The FBM KLCI added 4.38 points to 1,595.66 at the mid-day break.

Losers edged gainers by 257 to 297, while 295 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 471.75 million shares valued at RM531.72 million.

At the regional markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.20% to 9.565.81, Hong Kong’s hang Seng Index lost 1.11% to 20,365.10, the Shanghai Composite Index wa down 0.96% to 2,263.78, and South Korea’s Kopsi shed 0.03% to 1,996.55, while Singapore’s Straits Times Index added 0.23% to 2,967.04 and Taiwan’s Taiex gained 0.18% to 7,614.54.

BIMB Securities Research in a note Tuesday said that as expected, sellers overwhelmed Wall Street following the weak job data last week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average consequently declined 130 points to 12,929 as funds flowed back to the US Treasuries as depicted by a dip in the 10 year Treasury yield to 2.04% (-0.14%), it said.

The research house said investors would pay heed to some of the upcoming corporate earnings due this week.

With European markets closed for Easter, regional markets have had a rather traumatic Monday with almost all ending up in a sea of red taking cue the weak job data, it said.

“As for the local bourse, its performance was in synch with the regional decline as the FBMKLCI lost 7.6 points to 1,591 just above the support level of 1,590.

“We expect the market to be lacklustre today with the index to see further decline albeit marginally as China continues to be plagued by the fine art of balancing between growth and inflation. We see current developments as excellent windows of opportunities to accumulate and expect the index to hover between 1,585-90,” it said.

ON Bursa Malaysia, Tradewinds PLANTATION []s was the top gainer in the morning session and added 28 sen to RM5.73, Tradewinds up 23 sen to RM10.18, Bonia 17 sen to RM2.60, KPJ 15 sen to RM5.31, Batu Kawan and SMPC up 14 sen each to RM18.68 and RM2.50, Genting 12 sen to RM10.96, YHS 11 sen to RM2.75 and Carlsberg added 10 sen to RM10.84.

Tiger Synergy was the most actively traded counter with 24.8 million shares done. The stock was unchanged at 15.5 sen.

Other actives included KBES, Digi, Naim Indah Corp, CSL, KTB, Managed Pay and Asia Media.

Meanwhile, the decliners included Nestle, Aeon, Lafarge Malayan Cement, Panasonic, UAC, Parkson, Amtek, Shangri-La, LPI and Milux.

RHB Research ups KPJ fair value to RM5.69

KUALA LUMPUR (March 26): RHB Research Institute is positive on KPJ Healthcare’s move to accept an offer to acquire an 80% stake in PT KPJ Medika, which owns and operates a 92-bed private specialist hospital in Jakarta, for RM15.8 million.

The research house said on Monday it believes the acquisition price is attractive as the purchase consideration of RM15.8 million implies a historical FY11 price-to-earnings ratio (PER) of about 8.7 times and a target FY12 PER of 7.6 times to 7.9 times, assuming FY12 earnings growth of 10%-15% for the hospital. This would be near the lower-end of its previous average acquisition PER range was 8 times to 12 times.

“FY12-14 EPS forecasts increased by 1.8%-3.1% after factoring in a higher number of patients arising from the new capacity. Fair value raised to RM5.69 (from RM5.59), based on unchanged FY12 PER of 22.5 times (in line with peers’ average),” said RHB Research.

CIMB Research has technical buy on KPJ Healthcare at RM5.12

KUALA LUMPUR (March 19): CIMB Equities Research has a technical buy on KPJ Healthcare at RM5.12 at which it is trading at a price-to-book value of 3.4 times.

It said on Monday that the uptrend from its September 2011 low does not look complete.

“Recent consolidation stopped at the 23.8% FR level and the bulls have since taken the lead,” it said.

CIMB Research said that on Friday, the stock hit a new all time high of RM5.15, reflecting the bullishness of the stock.

“Indicators are showing sign of improvement. MACD signal line has staged a positive crossover while RSI has also hooked upward. Hence, we think the uptrend could last a while longer,” it said.

The research house said that aggressive traders may take some position here. The next upleg will likely lift prices towards RM5.40 and RM5.80.

However, always place a stop at below RM5.04 to RM5.00 in case the trend reverses.

All signs point to healthy numbers for KPJ

KPJ Healthcare Bhd (Feb 10, RM5.01)
Maintain buy with higher fair value of RM5.84 from RM5.21: On Feb 28, KPJ is due to release its FY11 results, which we expect to come in within our and consensus estimates.

With Integrated Healthcare Holdings’ (IHH) upcoming listing possibly sparking an upward sector rerating, we hold firm to our view that KPJ is an excellent long-term investment for portfolio balancing with immense growth potential in a defensive sector.

We expect KPJ to sustain strong top line growth of about 13% to 15% year-on-year (y-o-y). However, due to slower yield growth at new hospitals such as Tawakkal Specialist, Penang Specialist and Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) in Jakarta, group profit before tax (PBT) growth may come in at a more moderate 8% to 10% y-o-y.

That said, following an increase in capacity, yields started to improve at Penang Specialist while Tawakkal Specialist has started to show moderate yield improvement. As BSD is still in its gestation phase, it is expected to remain in the red but should perform over time as it develops a stronger patient base.

Bandar Baru Klang Specialist Hospital, on which construction was completed late last year, is expected to start operating in March, pending further regulatory approvals.

Four of KPJ’s new hospitals are under construction while work on another three is expected to start this year. Other than greenfield projects, KPJ is still on the lookout for potential acquisitions locally and abroad as part of its expansion strategy.

Its goal of reaching RM2 billion revenue for 2012 is highly achievable in view of the increase in patient capacity and higher facility utilisation.

We gather that its earlier acquisition of 51% equity interest in Jeta Gardens, which operates a nursing home in Queensland, Australia, was completed in late 2011 and has turned in a marginal net profit.

We maintain our forecast but are incorporating an enlarged share base of 594.3 million against 566.3 million previously as some of KPJ’s warrants have been exercised.

This accordingly dilutes our FY11 and FY12 earnings per share (EPS) by 4.9%. In line with the upward regional sector price-earnings ratio rerating, we are raising our price-earnings ratio on KPJ from 19.6 times to 23.1 times on FY12 EPS, based on a market cap weighted average regional sector PER. We maintain our “buy” recommendation on KPJ, but at a higher fair value of RM5.84, up from RM5.21 previously. — OSK Research, Feb 10

CIMB Research has technical sell on KPJ Healthcare at RM5

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 9): CIMB Equities Research has a technical sell on KPJ Healthcare at RM5 at which it is trading at a price-to-book value of 3.4 times.

It said on Thursday that KPJ’s rally appears to be at its tail end as it completes the final fifth wave.

The final fifth wave should carry prices a tad higher as it remains within its uptrend channel. The upside from here is likely to be limited.

“However, the technical momentum is beginning to wane. Both its MACD and RSI sports bearish divergence signals, which calls for caution. We believe that traders may be better off taking some profits now and let the rest run. The next resistance is at RM5.15,” it said.

CIMB Research said traders should be quick to take profits if the RM4.88 support gives way as a break below the key support could send prices falling back towards RM4.33, its 200-day SMA,” it said.

Beyond hospital healthcare services

Healthcare and pharmaceutical sector
Maintain overweight: Recently, we hosted a healthcare corporate luncheon and invited representatives from the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia, KPJ Healthcare Bhd, the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council, and Pemandu’s healthcare unit to present their views on the healthcare industry in Malaysia.

The key commonality is the potential prospects of healthcare in Malaysia as the “the hidden jewel”, in view of the inherent demand growth (both domestic and regional) and Malaysia’s strong cost competitiveness.

With the government’s target of becoming a developed nation by 2020, there has been an apparent change in lifestyle. We believe a rise in a society’s level of wealth will result in: (i) a natural increase in the diseases of the affluent; (ii) a rise in general healthcare awareness; (iii) a longer life expectancy; and (iv) an increase in the use of healthcare insurance. In turn, there will be an overall increase in demand for private healthcare services. This is positive for KPJ given its large hospital network across Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.

We believe a key growth driver for the healthcare industry will be the healthcare travel segment. Given Malaysia’s geographical location, we see the strong potential in this growing industry underpinned by: (i) relatively lower healthcare costs; (ii) excellent healthcare services (no long queues, specialised doctors, world class facilities); and (iii) many ideal holiday destinations. We think there is further upside within this segment taking into account of: (i) a growing Asian market — population and wealth; (ii) the advantage of Malaysia being a Muslim majority country; (iii) government support; (iv) relatively stable political environment; and (v) relatively fewer natural disasters. In addition, there are other healthcare-related segments (education and care for the aged) that could be potential growth drivers for the industry.

We maintain our “overweight” call on the sector and we believe KPJ is the best proxy to the Malaysian healthcare industry, being the only major listed healthcare service provider (that offers reasonable market size and trading liquidity).

Year-to-date, KPJ’s share price has appreciated by 4.9% and outperformed the KLCI by 4.5%, validating our conviction in its defensive growth characteristics.

Despite the good share price performance, we believe KPJ is still undervalued (price-earnings ratio [PER] of 17 times, 15% discount to regional peers).

We maintain our “buy” rating on KPJ with an upgraded target price of RM5.85 pegged to a higher PER target of 20 times on CY12 earnings per share (previously RM5.27 based on 18 times CY12 earnings per share).

We believe the increased PER target is fair given the company’s: (i) defensive growth; (ii) new growth drivers from its new ventures (nursing school, aged care facilities and Indonesia); and (iii) scarcity premium listing of Integrated Healthcare Holdings Sdn Bhd (IHH) which will lead to further price discovery. — Affin IB Research, Feb 3

RHB Research ups KPJ Healthcare FV to RM5.09

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 3): RHB Research Institute has raised the fair value for KPJ HEALTHCARE BHD [] to RM5.09 (from RM4.71) after ascribing a higher CY12 target PER of 20.5 times.

In its research note on Friday, it also maintained an Outperform outlook on KPJ.

RHB Research said the anticipated listing of Integrated Healthcare Holdings (IHH) in mid-2012 is expected to stir up investor interest and drive a rerating of the healthcare sector.

“We expect KPJ’s valuations to move closer to the new benchmark set by IHH over the longer term. Furthermore, KPJ’s aggressive local expansion plans should help the company maintain its dominance in Malaysia over the longer term,” it said.

RHB Research said its FY11-13 earnings forecasts are tweaked by -1.1%, -10.0% and +1.0% respectively after adjusting for the rescheduled openings of the Bandar Baru Klang Specialist and Muar hospitals and updating for ESOS shares.

KLCI edges up at mid-morning, but struggles to sustain early gains

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 2): The FBM KLCI rose at mid-morning on Thursday, in line with the gains at the key regional markets, but found it hard to sustains its gains.

At 10am, the FBM KLCI was up 7.87 points to 1,529.16, lifted by gains at select blue chips. The index had initially breached the 1,540-level in very early trade.

Gainers led losers by 388 to 188, while 287 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 628.94 million shares valued at RM519.44 million.

At the regional markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 1.2% to 29,577.00, Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.84% to 8,883.94, the Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.19% to 2,272.28, Taiwan’s Taiex rose 1.15% to 7,635.93, South Korea’s Kospi added 1.42% to 1,987.04 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index was up 0.44% to 2,917.59.

OSK Research director Chris Eng Poh Yoon in his February market outlook on Thursday said the research house’s January Sell call on the FBM KLCI was correct as the market dipped slightly, underperforming almost all major markets in the world.

He said its “Alternative” Top Buys also did well in January with four out of its five Top Buys outperforming the FBM KLCI, namely Supermax, JCY, Old Town and Sarawak Oil Palm

Still, markets performed better than expected and the global rally seems sustained by a flush of liquidity from the Long Term Refinancing Operation (LTRO), he said.

“As such, we are keeping a close eye on the market for the 1st half of Feb. If indeed markets continue to do well, we may be forced to abandon our Bearish stance and upgrade the KLCI to a Neutral with a preliminary year-end target of around 1,600 points.

“To note our 1,466 points current Fair Value will remain intact but it’s a Fair Value not a year-end target,” he said.

Eng said an upgrade would likely see the research house more aggressively promoting the CONSTRUCTION [] and O&G sectors, adding that for now, Consumer stocks are the flavor of the month.

“Top Buys are KPJ, MBSB, QL and Media Chinese as well as Padini which should attract interest as a cheap and good consumer stock,” he said.

On Bursa Malaysia, Petronas Gas added 52 sen to RM16.20, BAT 48 sen to RM49.88, Hartalega 47 sen to RM7.69, Ekovest 21 sen to RM2.96, Kretam and Petronas Dagangan 20 sen each to RM2.55 and RM18.30, Malayan Flour Mills 17 sen to RM4.50, United PLANTATION []s 16 sen to RM20.50, IJM Corp 14 sen to RM5.88 and Lafarge Malayan Cement up 12 sen to RM6.80.

The stock rose eight sen to 83 sen with 40.7 million shares done.

Other actives included Coastal Contracts, DRB-Hicom, DBE Gurney, UEM Land, Petronas Chemicals, Mudajaya and Jotech.

KLCI dips at mid-morning, sentiment continues to be jittery

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 10): The FBM KLCI fell at mid-morning on Tuesday amidst lackluster trade, weighed by losses at select blue chips including Genting-related stocks.

The FBM KLCI shed 0.61 of a point to 1,521.12 at mid-morning.

Losers edged gainers by 195 to 189, while 260 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 412.49 million shares valued at RM268.33 million.

Asian shares and the euro rose on Tuesday, but concerns over funding of euro zone sovereigns ahead of key auctions this week and of the debt crisis spilling over into the wider financial system kept investors cautious about taking riskier positions, according to Reuters.

With European woes overshadowing recent positive economic data from the United States, market players will be seeking from Chinese trade data due later in the session signs of how the euro zone debt crisis is affecting Asian growth, it said.

At the regional markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.41% to 8,424.47, South Korea’s Kospi gained 1.67% to 1,856.98, Taiwan’s Taiex was up 1.08% to 7,169.96, Singapore’s Straits Times Index gained 0.44% to 2,703.07, the Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.28% to 2,232.11 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index added 0.09% to 18,882.63.

MIDF Research acting head of equity Syed Muhammed Kifni said the market was expected to remain jittery going forward with the possibility of the KLCI re-testing its 2011 lows.

Nonetheless, he said that the Euro debt issue would begin to show credible signs of healing later in the 1H2012, adding that when that transpires, the underperforming indices can be expected to show swifter resurgence on the way up.

In contrast, the KLCI is anticipated to experience relative underperformance during the recovery phase, he said.

“With that in mind, we reiterate our KLCI year-end 2012 base case target of 1,530 points.

“As our base case KLCI year-end target for this year virtually matched its 2011 close, in our view, 2012 may quintessentially be a consolidation year.

Among the losers at mid-morning, Genting lost 12 sen to RM11.02, Genting PLANTATION []s down 10 sen to RM8.80, BHIC nine sen to RM3.70, KPJ eight sen to RM4.18, BLD Plantations seven sen to RM7.956, JCY six sen to RM1.05. Paragon 5.5 sen to 24.5 sen, while Tradewinds and Kian Joo lost five sen each to RM9.73 and RM2.07.

Takaso was the most actively traded counter with 41.99 million shares done. The stock gained 2.5 sen to 26.5 sen.

Other actives included KHSB, JCY, Harvest Court, Focus and Ingenuity Solutions.

Gainers included United Plantations, Petronas Dagangan, Petronas Gas, Harvest Court, BAT, CBIP and Mudajaya.

OSK maintains neutral view on the market

TEFD: What is your outlook for the Malaysian stock market and economy for 2012?
Eng: We remain neutral on the market as we see downside potential for the global economy and the Malaysian market.

What is your target for the FBM KLCI for 2012?
We maintain our 2012 fair value for the KLCI at 1,466 points.

How do you think the euro debt crisis will play out and what impact will it have on Malaysia?
I believe there is a high chance that Greece will eventually have to default. Whether it leaves the euro region at that point is still too difficult to say. Whether or not Greece defaults, a number of European countries should slip into recession in 2012 dampening global growth and trade and thus affecting Malaysia.

The years 2010-2011 were seen as years of merger and acquisition (M&A) activities, and the government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). What do you see as the domestic theme for 2012?
For 2012, it will be the election and post-election Malaysia which could well see a rollback of subsidies and how Malaysian companies will need to increase their efficiency to cope with this.

If general elections are held in 2012, how do you expect the market to react, pre- and post-election?
We found that buying just before an election and exiting one month later is the most consistent strategy for the Malaysian market, especially since we feel that there is a strong chance of the ruling coalition improving on its 2008 poll performance.

Election trading strategy should be short and tight. As such, investors should: (1) wait for profit-taking ahead of the general election before entering the market; (2) buy just before the election date and ride on the positive post election sentiment; (3) exit about one month after the election; (4) focus on blue chips in the banking, oil and gas and construction sectors rather than on so-called “election plays”.

However, we caution that the longer the government waits to hold an election, the greater the uncertainty of the results.

What sectors do you like for 2012?
Consumer, telco and healthcare.

What sectors would you avoid in 2012?
Tech and auto.

What are your top stock picks and why?
AirAsia Bhd as it benefits from lower oil price and the IPO of an associate; Axiata Group Bhd is still the cheapest telco with room for capital management; Malayan Banking Bhd — cheap and liquid bank vs return on equity; Petronas Gas Bhd — defensive with growth catalyst in liquefied natural gas; Telekom Malaysia Bhd — boosted by Unifi; Dialog Group Bhd — defensive O&G with tank terminals as its catalyst; KPJ Healthcare Bhd — hospital chain still growing strongly with re-rating catalyst from Parkway Pantai’s listing; QL Resources Bhd — replicating Malaysia’s success in Indonesia and Vietnam; Media Chinese International Ltd — benefiting from falling newsprint prices; TRC Synergy Bhd — strong exposure to the ETP via the MRT project.

Your wish list for the year?
For a free and fair election regardless of the outcome. And for racist rhetoric to be made a crime.

KLCI extends gains for seventh day

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 30): The FBM KLCI rose for the seventh day on Friday, and stayed above the 1,500-point level for the fourth day running, in line with the gains at most global markets.

US stocks rallied on Thursday, moving the S&P 500 back in positive territory for 2011 ahead of the last trading day of the year, on more positive signals on the U.S. economy, according to Reuters.

The FBM KLCI was up 5.42 points to 1,512.11 at mid-morning, lifted by select blue chips.

Gainers led losers by 216 to 139, while 264 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 233.73 million shares valued at RM156.04 million.

At the regional markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.39% to 8,431.49, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index added 0.42% to 18,474.82, the Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.63% to 2,187.25, Taiwan’s Taiex edged up 0.10% to 7,081.62 while Singapore’s Straits Times Index shed 0.21% to 2,667.09.

BIMB Securities Research in a note Dec 30 said it may be holiday mood for many but the equity markets are determined to end 2011 with a bang.

Encouraging signs of improved economic outlook from the US and a not too shabby Italian bond auction have placed investors on a steadier platform before entering into 2012, it said.

“For now, with 2012 just around the corner such positive news would be a welcomed sight and boost sentiments hence an all round gains by European bourses,” it said.

The research house said on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded a 135 point jump to almost 12,300 or an impressive 6% year-to-date improvement.

Meanwhile in Asia, the overall performance was rather mixed with Malaysia posting another positive session registering another 2.6 points gain to remain above the crucial 1,500 level, it said.

“We presume the FBMKLCI to maintain its uptrend with 1,515 as the immediate resistance.

“Though it falls short of our 1,530 closing target for 2011 we are still pleased,” it said.

On Bursa Malaysia, BAT was the top gainer at mid-morning and rose 34 sen to RM49.94; Petronas Gas was up 10 sen to RM15.30, Guan Chong up nine sen to RM2.10, Box-Pak eight sen to RM2.31, YHS and DiGi added seven sen each to RM1.92 and RM3.85, while KLK, Sime Darby and KPJ were up six sen each to RM22.74, RM9.06 and RM4.68.

Mulpha was the most actively traded counter with 22 million shares done. The stock added one sen to 39.5 sen.

Other actives included Utopia, TMS, LFE Corp, Scomi Marine, Sanichi and Scomi.

The decliners included Batu Kawan, Sunchirin, Hunza PROPERTIES [], GAB, Theta, KrisAssets, Nestle and Esso.

'Room for consolidation in healthcare sector'

The merger and acquisition (M&A) momentum in the healthcare sector is expected to continue next year with investors capitalising on the growing demand for healthcare products and services in Malaysia and the region, a research house said.

OSK Research said there was ample room for consolidation within the private healthcare segment, driven by the tighter regulations and rising competition, which has made it more difficult for small and standalone private hospitals to remain competitive.

"The impending listing of Parkway-Pantai could spark a valuation re-rating of the sector in 2012 as this listing is expected to set a high valuation benchmark for the sector," it said in its Investment Strategy 2012 note today.

Among potential growth opportunities in the sector include addressing the outpatient, community-based care and living needs of the elderly.

Although it is still a novel concept in Malaysia, the long-term goal is to create a number of centres offering assistance to people who need help with daily living activities, yet wish to live as independently as possible, for as long as possible.

The research house said unlike nursing homes which focus on the final stages of care, "seniors living" promote active ageing and productive living.

The key services that can be offered under the umbrella of seniors living include integrated personal assistance, domiciliary and personal and medical care.

"Realising the growth opportunities inherent in this segment in view of the dearth of such business models in Malaysia, local companies like KPJ have started venturing abroad to acquire prerequisite expertise with the intention of replicating such business models locally," said OSK Research.

On medical tourism, it said Malaysia still lags behind its regional peers, Singapore and Thailand, despite offering services that are on par or of better value.

However, the research house said there was a potential for Malaysia to become a major player by developing a national medical tourism brand via effective marketing campaigns and joint efforts to promote Malaysia as a world-class medical tourism destination.

Citing the sector's huge growth potential and defensive nature, OSK Research has retained its "Overweight" outlook on the healthcare sector. -- Bernama

OSK Research: 2012 Outlook – be nimble in the “way of the market”

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 25): OSK Investment Research has a Neutral outlook on the Malaysian market going into 2012 as the combination of uncertain growth outlook in the US and Asia coupled with a positive recession in Europe cloud the prospects for strong earnings growth locally.

Its director Chris Eng in his 2012 market outlook strategy report on Dec 23 said that while Malaysia would likely avoid slipping into a recession, the deficit reduction exercises undertaken by Eurozone economies may well tip their slow growing economies into a recession.

“In any case, for Malaysia, we see earnings growth slipping to between mid single digits and low double digits, a pale shadow of what it was in 2006, 2007 and 2010 when earnings growth came in between 20 to 30%,” he said.

Eng said newsflow on developments surrounding the handling of sovereign debt in Europe and the US would also likely lead to volatile markets worldwide, adding that in the short term, volatile markets will likely give way to a dampened economic outlook.

“We advise investors stay cautious into mid 2012 and focus on Defensive sectors such as Consumer, Telco, Healthcare and Media.

“Our 2012 KLCI fair value is 1,466 points based on a PER of 13.5 times or 1 standard deviation below the historical average of 16.6 times given the uncertain market conditions,” he said.

At the same time, when trading opportunities present themselves, Banks, O&G and CONSTRUCTION [] should come into play, he said.

Eng said OSK Research was Overweight on 7 sectors, Neutral on 9 and Underweight on 2 sectors.

“In terms of our Top Buys, they reflect this overall strategy.

“Six of our Top Buys, namely Axiata, PetGas, Telekom Malaysia, QL Resources, KPJ Healthcare and Media Chinese reflect our Defensive Strategy while 2 others are from our Alternative Defensive Buys namely AirAsia and TRC Synergy,” he said.

KPJ: Defensive business and earnings

Demand for healthcare services is relatively recession-proof, so we do not expect KPJ Healthcare’s (RM4.28) earnings to be affected by the prevailing uncertainties and global economic slowdown. Indeed, the company continues to plan for new additions to its network of 20 specialist hospitals in the country. KPJ also manages two hospitals in Indonesia.

Last month, KPJ announced plans for two new hospitals in Klang and Penang. The company also proposes to acquire several plots of land in Sazaen Business Park, Klang, for some RM23.8 million. Development costs for the total area of 1.84ha are estimated at RM110 to RM120 million, while construction costs for the hospital building are about RM80 million. We expect completion in 2015.

The company has entered into an agreement to lease a hospital building from Aseania Development for a 10-year period. This new facility will be on land adjacent to the existing Penang Specialist Hospital. Aseania has the rights to develop a township in Seberang Prai and will build the medical facility according to KPJ’s specifications.

These plans are in line with the company’s target to open at least one or two hospitals per year over the next few years. It already has several new projects under development.

Expansion projects under development
Construction of the Bandar Baru Klang Specialist Hospital is complete and the hospital is expected to open within the next few months. This hospital has been earmarked for sale to the Al-’Aqar KPJ REIT, along with the Kluang Utama Specialist Hospital and Rumah Sakit Bumi Serpong Damai in Indonesia for a collective RM139 million.

In addition, construction of a new hospital building in Kota Kinabalu is underway. Upon completion, expected to be in 1H12, the Sabah Medical Centre will be relocated from its existing facility to the new building. The new 250-bed hospital is expected to cost RM180 to RM200 million. Recall that KPJ acquired a 51% stake in Sabah Medical Centre, back in June 2010 for RM51 million. Two other smaller hospitals, in Muar and Pasir Gudang, are planned for 2H12.

Looking further head, KPJ has plans for another hospital in Tanjung Lumpur, Kuantan, under a 70:30 joint venture with Pasdec Corp. The hospital building is slated to complete sometime in 2013. Another specialist hospital in Perlis, one of the three states where KPJ does not have a presence, is on the drawing board. This 90-bed hospital will be a 60:40 joint venture with the Yayasan Islam Perlis. Construction is targeted for completion in 2014. The company is also in preliminary discussions to set up a hospital in Bandar Datuk Onn, Johor. This facility is estimated to have a capacity of almost 400 beds once it is fully operational.

These new hospitals and organic expansion will underpin growth over the next few years. Typically, a new hospital opens in phases, with the addition of more beds, facilities and range of services over time in lockstep with demand growth.

Given its experience, KPJ is also exploring opportunities to provide consultancy to other providers, both locally and abroad, in areas such as healthcare business development and hospital management.

Expanding upstream education arm
At the same time, KPJ plans to expand its education arm, in part to support the growth of its hospital network. The company first set up the Puteri Nursing College back in 1991 to ensure a steady pool of capable and qualified nursing staff for its hospitals. The college was recently awarded university college status, and renamed KPJ International University College of Nursing and Health Sciences (KPJIC). That means it can now offer its own degree programmes.

In view of its relative success, however, KPJ now plans to develop KPJIC into a leading centre for nursing and medical-related studies in the country — to produce qualified healthcare personnel not only for its own hospitals but also for other private healthcare operators and the public healthcare sector.

KPJ believes it has an edge over similar education groups in the market, in that it can leverage existing infrastructure. For instance, students can undergo clinical practice in its network of hospitals where its medical consultants and senior nurses can also give lectures and guidance. Indeed, the company has not registered any noticeable drop in student intake, unlike slowing growth for some of its peers.

KPJIC has total capacity for 2,500 students at its main campus in Nilai, Negri Sembilan, and a branch campus in Johor Baru. A second branch campus is currently under construction in Bukit Mertajam. Some RM120 million has been budgeted to expand the campus in Nilai in two phases. The company expects capacity to increase to 5,000 students by 2013. By 2016, KPJIC hopes to achieve full university status, with its own medical school and total student intake capacity of some 10,000, including local and foreign students.

Longer-term venture into retirement village and aged care facilities
Over the longer term, KPJ is looking to expand its services to include retirement homes and aged care facilities — a market segment that is expected to grow rapidly. Indeed, this market is already a big business in most developed countries.

According to the latest Census 2010, there is a gradual shift in Malaysia’s demographics with the proportion of those below the age of 15 falling to 27.6% from 33.3% in 2000 while those aged 65 and above rose to 5.1% from 3.9% over the same period. At this pace, we will hit the definition of ageing population by 2015. The long-term uptrend in average life expectancy is another stronger driver for demand for aged care services.

To gain a first mover advantage, KPJ acquired a 51% stake in Jeta Gardens for RM19 million. Jeta owns and operates a 26ha retirement village in Queensland, Australia. The project is still only partially developed and currently consists of 23 retirement villas, 32 apartments and a 108-bed aged care facility. The longer-term plan is to develop it into a one-stop centre that includes an aged care nursing college and medical centre.

While earnings contribution from Jeta is expected to be minimal, the company intends to gain valuable insights and experience from this venture, a business model it hopes to emulate locally.

On track for steady earnings growth
The company’s latest earnings results for 3QFY11 were broadly in line with our expectations. Turnover rose 9% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM476 million, underpinned by rising demand for healthcare services as well as the addition of Sibu Specialist Medical Centre to its network of specialist hospitals in April 2011.

In line with the higher turnover, pre-tax profit increased 11% y-o-y to RM47.9 million while net profit rose 14% to RM34.5 million. There were no major extraordinary items during the quarter. Net profit for the full-year is estimated at roughly RM124.8 million, up from RM118.9 million in 2010 (including one-off gains totaling some RM8.2 million). Earnings are forecast to expand further to RM131.2 million in 2012. That prices the stock at roughly 20 times our estimated earnings for 2011and 19 times for 2012 and 22.2 and 21.1 times on a fully-diluted basis. Its valuations are higher those of the broader market. We suspect this is due to the company’s relatively defensive business as well as its positive longer-term growth prospects. We believe the stock will yield positive returns in the long run.

KPJ paid out roughly half of annual net profit as dividends in the past four years, on average. Assuming a similar payout ratio going forward, dividends are estimated to total 10.7 sen per share in 2011 and 11.3 sen in 2012. That translates into net yields of about 2.5% and 2.6% for shareholders over the two years. Its share will trade ex-entitlement for a third interim dividend of 2.5 sen per share on Dec 28.

Note that the company will receive some 56.6 million units in Al-’Aqar, worth roughly RM64 million at the current unit price of RM1.13, as part payment for the injection of three hospital buildings into the trust. It could distribute these units to shareholders as dividends in specie or sell them on the open market. This is so the company can maintain its stake at less than 50% to keep the REIT’s assets and borrowings off its balance sheet.

The company has some 78.1 million warrants outstanding. The warrants can be converted into ordinary shares at anytime up to January 2015 at an exercise price of RM1.70. At the prevailing price of RM2.54, the warrants are trading at a very slight 1% discount. Assuming full conversion, KPJ’s total share capital will increase to 659.6 million shares, from the current 581.6 million shares.
