KLCI advances as Asian markets fall

KUALA LUMPUR (May 4) : Malaysian stocks rose on Friday morning as Asian peers declined following a weaker overnight performance by US equities.

Global markets have taken the cue from weaker updates on the US’ services industry and private sector hiring, deemed crucial indicators of the health of the world’s largest economy and major importer of goods from emerging Asian countries.

In Malaysia, analysts have cautioned investors that gains in the 30-stock FBM KLCI could be curbed by domestic pre-election sentiment and global factors. As such, it will be interesting to see if the benchmark can sustain its gains.

“A strong rally above 1,600 would give the bulls the momentum to test the historical high at 1,609,” Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd wrote in a note.

At 9.59am, the FBM KLCI added 5.28 points to 1,588.45. Across the exchange, some 318 million shares worth RM188 million were traded, leading to 261 gainers versus 155 decliners.

Top gainers BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO (M) [] Bhd added RM1.76 to RM57 while NESTLE (M) BHD [] was up 30 sen to RM55.80.

Among decliners, SOUTHERN ACIDS (M) BHD [] fell 21 sen to RM2.21 while GRAND HOOVER BHD [] was down 10.5 sen to 20 sen

Among actively-traded stocks, ASTRAL SUPREME BHD [] fell one sen to 31.5 sen with some 15 million shares done.

Across Asia, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.5% to 4,406.9 points while South Korea’s Kospi fell by a similar quantum to 1,985.23. Singapore’s Straits Times was down 0.3% to 2,992.02. The Japan bourse is closed for a public holiday.

Malaysian stocks gain on US economic data

KUALA LUMPUR (May 2) : Malaysian shares gained on Wednesday morning in tandem with Asian peers following a stronger close across US stock markets in overnight trade.

World markets have reacted positively to better US manufacturing data in April, during which, the growth rate was the strongest in 10 months , according to the Institute for Supply Management.

In technical terms, analysts, however, foresee downside possibilities for Malaysia’s stock benchmark FBM KLCI as the index had failed to close above the 50-day moving average of 1,584 points as of last Monday. As such, it will be interesting to see if the 30-stock FBM KLCI will be able to sustain its gains on Wednesday.

At 9.59am, the gauge added 6.07 points to 1,576.88. Across the exchange, some 269 million shares worth RM161 million were traded, leading to 222 gainers versus 126 decliners.

Top gainers NESTLE (M) BHD [] rose 62 sen to RM55.92 while AEON CREDIT SERVICE (M) BHD [] added 30 sen to RM11.

Among decliners, BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO (M) [] Bhd fell 44 sen to RM55.10, while DUTCH LADY MILK INDUSTRIES BHD [] was down 30 sen to RM33.10.

Among actively-traded stocks, ASTRAL SUPREME BHD [] added one sen to 34 sen with some 14 million shares done.

Stocks to watch: Harvest, Can-One, Astral Supreme, Muhibbah

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 7): Stocks on Bursa Malaysia could start on a cautious note next week, Jan 9, on continuing worries about a looming recession in Europe and the eurozone crisis, but fresh corporate news could provide some support.

On the local political front, the court is set to deliver its ruling on Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial on Monday morning.

On Friday, the police agreed to allow PKR supporters to gather peacefully at the car park outside the Jalan Duta court complex here when the court is scheduled to deliver the verdict in Anwar's sodomy case.

On Wall Street, U.S. stocks rose in the first week of 2012, even though news that the U.S. jobless rate neared a three-year low did not whet interest in equities on Friday.

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.2%, the S&P gained 1.6% and the Nasdaq added 2.7% for the week, with most gains coming from cyclical sectors tied to growth.

Reuters reported on Friday that fears a capital black hole are spreading over the euro zone's banking sector threatens to overshadow the first meeting in 2012 of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy next week to discuss the region's debt crisis.

European banks technically have until Jan. 20 to say how they will raise the estimated 115 billion euro ($147.12 billion)of capital needed by the end of June to repair balance sheets devastated by the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis.

But investors' nerves have become frayed after seeing Italian bank UniCredit forced to deeply discount a planned one-for-one equity rights issue, and calls for more details on how others plan to raise funds are set to grow, Reuters said

At Bursa Malaysia, among the stocks to watch include HARVEST COURT INDUSTRIES BHD [], CAN-ONE BHD [], KIAN JOO CAN FACTORY BHD [], ASTRAL SUPREME BHD [] and Muhibbah Engineering Bhd.

Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd is removing the trading curbs on Harvest Court Industries Bhd’s shares and warrants with effect from Monday – nearly eight weeks after they were imposed on Nov 16.

Can-One Bhd won the legal tussle to acquire the 146.13 million Kian Joo Can Factory Bhd held by Kian Joo Holdings Sdn Bhd after a Federal Court ruled in its favour on Thursday.

Can-One announced to Bursa Malaysia that the apex court had allowed its appeal to proceed with the completion of the acquisition of the 32.9% stake for RM241.11 million.

Astral Supreme secured a €2.96 million (RM12.45 million) contract from Germany’s Sphairon Technologies GmbH.

What would interest investors is that based on the company’s annual revenue for financial year ended Dec 31, 2010 of RM13.36 million, the order value was about 93.2% of the latest annual revenue.

Muhibbah’s shares could be given a boost after CIMB Bank Bhd, which is the financier of the Asia Petroleum Hub Sdn Bhd (APH) project, has appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as receivers and managers over APH to facilitate a restructuring exercise.

Muhibbah maintained the APH project was viable and it was “working with various financiers, including CIMB, and other relevant parties towards an amicable solution”.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 6): ASTRAL SUPREME BHD [] has received a boost with the securing of a €2.96 million (RM12.45 million) contract from Germany’s Sphairon Technologies GmbH.

It said on Friday its electronic contract manufacturing division Singatronics (M) Sdn Bhd had received orders to produce 70,000 units of its EasyBox product for Vodafone.

Astral Supreme said under the contract, the expected delivery was 5,000 units every two weeks.

“The company’s latest annual revenue for financial year ended Dec 31, 2010 was RM13.36 million and the order value is approximately 93.2% of its latest annual revenue,” it said.

OSK Research: Strong rising volume in Astral Supreme

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 16): OSK Research said since August this year, Astral Supreme has been sustaining its posture at above the prior key low of 14 sen with heavy volume.

“Traders could consider accumulating the shares at the current level or closer to the 14 sen level.

“A break above the 100-week MAV line is expected to draw stronger upward momentum, which could potentially carry the stock to the next major resistance of the 200-week MAV line. Our cut-loss point is pegged at below the key low of 14 sen,” it said.
