KLCI succumbs to global economic woes

KUALA LUMPUR (APRIL 17): The FBM KLCI succumbed to the mounting concerns over the euro zone sovereign debt crisis that kept most regional markets in negative territory on Tuesday.

The FBM KLCI closed 1.32 points lower at 1,596.19.

Gainers edged losers by 355 to 341, while 351 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 2.08 billion shares valued at RM1.63 billion.

Hong Kong shares fell on Tuesday, dragged lower by large-cap bank and materials shares as nervous investors awaited a bond auction which could see a further jump in Spain's borrowing costs, threatening a new crisis in the euro zone, according to Reuters.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite fell 0.94% to 2,334.98, while the CSI300 index was off 1.3 percent, it said.

Elsewhere, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.23% tyo 20,562.31, Japan’s Nikkei 225 shed 0.06% to 9,464.71, Taiwan’s taiex lost 1.86% to 7,585.87, South Korea’s Kospi down 0.37% to 1,985.30 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index shed 0.18% to 2,986.59.

Among the decliners on Bursa Malaysia, Dutch Lady fell 56 sen to RM34.60, Warisan down 30 sen to RM2.33, Tahps fell 27 sen to RM4.53, BAT lost 22 sen to RM54.46, SMPC 21 sen to RM1.12, MISC 13 sen to RM5.17, while KLuang and Ta Ann fell 12 sen each to RM2.68 and RM6.57.

Ariantec Global was the most actively traded counter with 515.66 million shares done. The stock jumped 8.5 sen to 20 sen. It had earlier been issued an unusual market activity (UMA) query by Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd to Ariantec Global Bhd over the sharp rise in the price and high volume in the company’s shares recently.

Other actives included Metronic, Focus, Astral Supreme, Ingenuity Solutions, SuperComNet, CSL, Naim Indah Corp and Winsun.

Meanwhile, the gainers on Tuesday included SAM Engineering, Carlsberg, CSL, Subur Tiasa, Y&G, Golsta, Southern Acids, Rapid, Manulife and The Store.

KLCI erases gains, up 2.3pts at midday

KUALA LUMPUR (April 13): The Malaysian equities barometer erased earlier gains, but still managed to settle in positive territory towards the Friday lunch break.

Gains in the FBM KLCI were in tandem with global markets, which found support from updates that Italian government bonds have seen better than expected demand, although China's first quarter economic growth of 8.1% came in below street estimates.

In technical terms, analysts said dynamics of the FBM KLCI are still weak. In a note on Friday, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd said that although the index had breached the 1,600-point level, technical dynamics of the index are still deemed weak unless the gauge trades above the all-time high of 1,609.33.

This could result in an uptrend resumption for the FBM KLCI, according to Kenanga.

At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI added 2.3 points to 1,603.57. Across the exchange, some 653 million shares worth RM612 million were traded, leading to 331 gainers versus 277 decliners.

Top gainer Sam Engineering & Equipment (M) Bhd rose 58 sen to RM2.65, while GUINNESS ANCHOR BHD [] was up 36 sen to RM13.

Decliner Tradewinds PLANTATION [] Bhd fell 21 sen to RM5.69, while KLUANG RUBBER CO (M) BHD [] was down 10 sen to RM2.80.

Most active was INGENUITY SOLUTIONS BHD [], which added one sen to 10 sen with some 100 million shares done.

Among Asian bourses, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 1.41% to 9,658.66 points, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.8% to 4,314.7. The Shanghai Composite was up 0.18% 2,355.14.

KLCI reverses earlier loss, breaches 1,600-level at mid-day break

KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): The FBM KLCI reversed its earlier losses and breached the 1,600-point level at the mid-day break on Thursday, as regional markets turned positive as well.

The FBM KLCI added 0.24% or 3.76 points to 1,600.93 at the mid-day break, lifted by gains at select blue chips.

Gainers trailed losers by 267 to 302, while 308 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 553.07 million shares valued at RM574.19 million.

Asian shares eked out small gains and the euro steadied on Thursday, reflecting investor caution over sovereign funding for troubled eurozone economies Spain and Italy, despite their declining yields that helped global equities rebound overnight, according to Reuters.

An encouraging start to the earnings season helped US stocks snap a five-day losing streak, spurring investors to scale back safe haven buying of gold and US and German government debt on Wednesday, but further selling of these perceived safe assets weakened in Asia on Thursday, its aid.

At the regional markets, the Shanghai Composite Inded added 0.40% to 2,318.16, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.36% to 20,212.83, Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.29% to 9,.485.52, Taiwan's Taiex edged up 0.04% to 7,659.70, Singapore's Straits Times Index rose 0.58% to 2,963.29 while South Korea's Kospi shed 0.90% to 1,976.83.

BIMB Securities Research in a note Thursday said that buoyed by Alcoa's better than expected earnings for the 1Q12 plus easing concerns over Europe, investors became less edgy thus the 89 points gain for the Dow Jones Industrial Average to surpass the 12,800 level.

The research house However said it still detected a hint of skepticism as Wall Street closed 40 points off its intra-day high.

As for Europe, successful sale of bonds by Germany, Italy and Spain had allayed fears of a deepening crisis, it said.

In response to indications of more bond purchases, yields for both Italy and Spain declined hence pushed European bourses all higher.

It was a rather mixed day for Asian markets as most are still coping with indications from both the US and Europe.

"Malaysia was closed for public holiday (on Wednesday) after another interesting day on Tuesday with the FBM KLCI adding almost 6 points to inch closer to 1,600 again.

"We reckon buying on the local bourse to persist supporting any weaknesses. Today, we may see the 1,600 mark to be breached again," it said.

On Bursa Malaysia, BAT was the top gainer in the morning session and rose 86 sen to RM55.56, SMPC 34 sen to RM1.48, Genting PLANTATION []s up 21 sen to RM9.73, Timwell up 14 sen to 95 sen, Tradewinds Plantations up 12 sen to RM5.83, CyberTowers up 11.5 sen to 70.5 sen, MSC up 11 sen to RM4.72, Kluang up 10 sen to RM2.90, while Tenaga and Advanced Packaging added nine sen each to RM6.46 and RM1.39 respectively.

The decliners included Dutch Lady, Manulife, GAB, Chin Teck, Toyo Ink, BLD Plantations, Top Glove, Pansonic and KLK, while the actives included Asia Bio, Tiger Synergy, Metronic, Asia Global, DGSB and Tambun.

KLCI pares down gains at mid-day, Asian markets mixed

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 4): The FBM KLCI pared down it gains at the mid-day break on Wednesday as the Hong Kong and China markets retreated into negative territory, while other markets saw limited gains.

Hong Kong shares reversed early gains to finish lower at midday on Wednesday, underperforming Asian peers, with lackluster turnover suggesting investors were cautious, refraining from chasing recent gains, according to Reuters.

Mainland Chinese markets reopened after a New Year holiday to an ambivalent start despite expectations that some favourable policy news over the long weekend could boost sentiment. Weakness in China weighed on Hong Kong, Reuters cited traders as saying.

The FBMKLCI was up 1.21 points to 1,514.75 at 12.30pm, lifted by gains at select blue chips. The index had earlier risen to its intra-morning high of 1,525.14.

Gainers led losers by 377 to 269, while 306 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 958.42 million shares valued at RM782.15 million.

The ringgit strengthened 0.38% to 3.1388 versus the US dollar; crude palm oil futures for the third month delivery fell RM23 per tonne to RM3,198, crude oil shed 17 cents per barrel to US$102.79 while gold lost US$4.50 an ounce to US$1,599.00.

At the regional markets, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 1.32% to 8,566.67, Singapore’s Straits Times Index added 0.54% to 2,702.87, Taiwan’s Taiex rose 0.32% to 7,075.94 and South Korea’s Kospi edged up 0.01% to 1,875.57.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.29% to 18,822.68 and the Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.22% to 2,194.67.

On Bursa Malaysia, Dutch Lady was the top gainer at the mid-day break and was up 78 sen to RM24.20.

Other gainers included KLK that rose 60 sen to RM23.60, BAT 44 sen to RM49.88, Batu Kawan 40 sen to RM17.90, BHIC 22 sen to RM3.84, Shell 15 sen to RM9.30, MISC 13 sen to RM5.73, Ajiya and Jaya Tiasa up 12 sen each to RM1.75 and RM7.02, while LPI Capital added 10 sen to RM13.78.

Among the decliners, Petronas Dagangan fell 22 sen to RM17.22, GAB down 12 sen to RM13.22, Kluang 11 sen to RM2.54, AIC 10 sen to RM1.20, Iretex nine sen to 91 sen, while Tradewinds, Asdion and UEM Land lost seven each to RM9.90, 35 sen and RM2.31 respectively.

The actives included HWGB, JCY, Maxbiz, Envair, XDL, Karambunai and Nextnation.

KLCI extends losses, Asian mkts mired in red

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 18): Growing fears of deepening funding difficulties in Europe that has kept Asian equity markets for four days in a row sent the FBM KLCI lower at the mid-day break on Friday, Nov 18.

The FBM KLCI fell 2.84 points to 1,462.63 at 12.30pm, with losses at select blue chips as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of the weekend.

Gainers trailed losers by 164 to 471, while 248 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 763.77 million shares valued at RM562.01 million.

The ringgit weakened 0.15% to 3.1630 versus the US dollar; crude palm oil futures for third month delivery rose RM16 per tonne to RM3,228, crude oil fell 27 cents per barrel to US$98.55 while gold added US$2.33 an ounce to US$1,724.10.

At the regional markets, South Korea’s Kospi fell 2.02% to 1,838.73, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 1.81% to 18,476.24, Taiwan’s Taiex was down 1.67% to 7,264.65, the Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.35% to 2,429.86, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.25% to 8,373.52 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index shed 1.14% to 2,746.69.

On Bursa Malaysia, HLFG was the top loser this morning and fell 20 sen to RM11.36; Kluang, Ibraco, Public Bank, AIC and UMW lost 10 sen each to RM2.50, RM1.27, RM12.58, RM1.16 and RM6.50 respectively, Aeon Credit, MISC and TDM lost nine sen each to RM5.56, RM6.60 and RM3.27 respectively, while Edaran fell 8.5 sen to 31 sen.

Frontken was the most actively traded counter with 44.8 million shares done. The stock fell half a sen to 13.5 sen.

Other actives included Compugates, Extol, DPS Resources, SAAG, Envair and SYF Resources.

Among the gainers, BAT rose 32 sen to RM46.62, Fima Corp 30 sen to RM6.10, Tradewinds and Harvest Court 16 sen each to RM9.19 and RM1.20, Tradewinds PLANTATION []s 14 sen to RM3.74, DiGi 12 sen to RM34.94, Ewein 9.5 sen to RM1.06, Ekovest nine sen to RM2.70 while KrisAssets added eight sen to RM4.38.
